GOLDEN SIERRA TEACHER WINS GVFD DEFENSIBLE SPACE RAFFFLE
At the May 11, 2009 Garden Valley Fire Board member Karen Smith made GSHS teacher Fred Kendall a happy man by drawing his ticket as the winner of the Garden Valley Firefighters Associations Defensible Space Raffle. Members of the Garden Valley Volunteer Firefighters Association and Local 4691 of the Garden Valley Professional Firefighters sponsored the raffle to raise awareness of the benefits of providing a 100 foot fire resistant, vegetation controlled space around your home to give firefighters the opportunity protect the structure from wildfire. A total of 160 tickets were sold with the proceeds going towards the GVFF Associations scholarship program for graduating high school students wishing to pursue a public safety career. This year’s recipient of the scholarship is Golden Sierra senior Caleb Susic who will be attending American River College next fall with the goal of becoming a Firefighter/Paramedic in the future. Volunteers and staff met at the Mt Murphy home of Fred Kendall on Friday and Saturday clearing brush, trimming low hanging branches, cleaning gutters, removing dead and dying trees and getting real familiar with Poison Oak and its effects! The Kendall home will serve as a visable example of proper defensible space techniques. Pleases contact the Garden Valley Fire Protection District at 333-1240 to arrange a viewing of this project.
